Via Sofia’s provides donated meals to healthcare workers
Cedar Rapids, Iowa— April 20, 2020 — Via Sofia’s, a fast-casual Italian restaurant in Cedar Rapids, is collecting donations to feed healthcare and emergency service workers in the Corridor. Each week, donations from their “Food for Heroes” GoFundMe page are turned into meals for local heroes working on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis.
Donations collected this week will provide a catered lunch for the Intensive Care and COVID-19 staff at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Next week, donations will benefit the MercyCare Marion Urgent Care, which has become MercyCare’s respiratory clinic caring for COVID-19 patients.
“Our local heroes have bigger things to worry about than packing a lunch,” said Michelle Stramel, Via Sofia’s Marketing Manager. “They give their time, energy and love to our community, and we want to give back!”
UPDATE: This campaign ended on May 21, 2020. $575 was raised from the community and vouchers or food were provided to the Health Care Heroes at St. Luke's ICU, MercyCare Respiratory Clinic, Community Health Free Clinic, and Eastern Iowa Health Center. Thank you to all who gave so generously!
Local Italian restaurant donates to families affected by COVID-19
Cedar Rapids, Iowa— March 20, 2020 — Via Sofia’s, a Cedar Rapids-born Italian restaurant chain, is donating part of their profits through April to help families affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. Ten percent of profits from orders of the popular “Family Feast” carry-out special will be donated to families in the Cedar Rapids area.
The Family Feast special feeds up to six people and costs $19.99. It contains a half-gallon bucket of spaghetti and meat sauce, a 16 inch “Gondola” sub, and a loaf of garlic bread, which is baked fresh every day.
“It is our privilege to serve our local community,” said Michelle Stramel, Via Sofia’s Marketing Manager. “And while that usually means just serving them food, sometimes you have to adjust your direction to do what is best for your community.”
Via Sofia’s first opened in 1984 by John Khairallah, who won the Iowa Restaurant Association American Dream Award in 2017. Since their opening over thirty years ago, the restaurant chain has expanded to have two locations in Cedar Rapids and a franchise location in Cedar Falls.
“In a time of uncertainty and hardship, this is a great chance to support a local business and local families,” said Stramel. “Plus, get a delicious dinner out of the deal!”
Though their dine-in service has been suspended to limit contact and prevent the spread of COVID-19, Via Sofia’s full menu is available for delivery or curbside pickup.
UPDATE: On May 6, 2020, a $500 check was presented to Families Helping Families of Iowa which was 10% of our profits from Family Feast sales in March.
Preparation and Response: COVID-19
To Our Valued Guests,
UPDATE 5/16/2020: We are currently offering Carry-out and Curb-side service at our Center Point Road location. In addition to Carry-out and Curb-side service, we are offering limited dine-in service at our 1st Avenue location.
As together we experience the impact of the coronavirus, we want to make sure you know that your health and safety are our top priority as always.
As a food-service provider, we are ServSafe certified and operate by restaurant industry standards for cleanliness. These include using proper cleaning and disinfecting solutions on surfaces as well as ensuring our employees follow required handwashing protocol.
During this time of concern, we are increasing our normally diligent efforts with extra measures including:
- Our employees are already required to stay home when sick. We are now asking employees to take their temperature before coming to work each day and to stay home if there is an elevated temperature since this has been determined to be an early indicator of infection with COVID-19.
- We have scheduled extra cleaning and sanitizing of the restaurant including wiping down every surface and handle throughout the day.
- We are now offering service for carry-out and delivery only. Please note: If you would like us to bring your order to your car, please order online and pay ahead. Then call us when you are outside and ready to receive your order and we will bring it out.
We will continue to monitor the situation and comply with advice offered by local authorities and the Restaurant Association.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience as we navigate through this together.
